The result of much research, Pavelis’s paints are handmade.  He utilizes diverse oil and medium recipes from the early Renaissance to the Baroque, integrating these on the same canvas in compelling, compatible ways. To ensure longevity and trueness, only the most durable and luminous pigments are mixed.

Paintings are executed on canvas, panel or canvas on panel.  Well-proven craftsmanship of previous artistic periods informs his choices, while modern improvements extend the permanence and originality of his materials.

Many artistic sources inspire his technique—from a detail of a manuscript illumination, to the transparency of a Dutch still life, to the freshness of an Impressionist impasto.

Experimenting with techniques, he has learned to respect the link between his materials and his creativity:  “As knowledge of my oils and mediums grows, my artistic vision expands in unpredictable ways.”
